Deep Brain reorienting

Deep Brain Reorienting offers a gentle way to release trauma that talking alone can't always reach. Instead of asking you to retell what happened, DBR works with the body's very first response to danger, the response that forms before emotion or thought even catches up, so the nervous system can finally finish what it started and settle.

You may already be able to describe what happened calmly, in detail, without much feeling at all, and your body still reacts like it's happening now. Your chest tightens. Your throat closes. You brace or go still without knowing why. If you've done trauma work before and something still feels stuck underneath it, DBR was built for exactly that layer.

What Is Deep Brain Reorienting?

DBR is a newer, neuroscience-informed therapy developed by psychiatrist Dr. Frank Corrigan. Rather than focusing on the content or story of a traumatic event, DBR tracks the orienting response, the automatic reaction that begins in the brainstem the instant the body first registers threat, before fight, flight, freeze, or any conscious emotion takes shape. In session, we follow physical sensations along the midline of the body, in the eyes, the throat, and the chest, moving slowly enough for that original, interrupted response to complete. Many people feel a spontaneous release when this happens: a deep breath, a shudder, a wave of warmth, followed by a settled, embodied sense that the danger is actually over.

Benefits of Deep Brain Reorienting

Common benefits include:

  • A calmer body: Chronic tightness in the chest, throat, or shoulders begins to ease.

  • Less bracing: You stop flinching at reminders that used to catch you off guard.

  • Fewer shutdown episodes: Freeze or numbing responses happen less often and pass more quickly when they do.

  • Clearer thinking: Old shock stops clouding present-day decisions and relationships.

  • A deeper sense of safety: A felt sense that "it's over now" replaces ongoing alertness.

  • A gentler process: You don't need to retell the story in detail for the work to be effective.

  • Progress where other approaches stalled: DBR can reach shock and attachment-level trauma that talk therapy, or even EMDR alone, sometimes can't fully resolve.

Signs You May Benefit from Deep Brain Reorienting

  • Your body reacts even when your mind feels like it has "moved on"

  • You brace, flinch, or hold your breath without knowing why

  • You feel disconnected from your body, or go numb under stress

  • A certain look, tone of voice, or sudden movement can trigger you instantly

  • EMDR or talk therapy has helped, but something underneath still feels stuck

  • You freeze rather than fight or flee when overwhelmed

  • You want to process trauma without repeating the story in detail every time

How Deep Brain Reorienting Works

Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes, a little longer than standard talk therapy, since DBR moves at a slow, body-led pace by design. We offer DBR both in person and online. [Confirm: add your office location/service area and current scheduling details here.]

Why Choose DBR at Vive Wellness Therapy

Melissa Melnychuk, Registered Psychotherapist, is trained in both Deep Brain Reorienting and EMDR. Rather than applying one protocol to every client, she draws on whichever approach, or combination of the two, matches what your nervous system can tolerate in the moment. The work is paced by your body, not a script, and you're never required to disclose more than feels right for the process to move forward.
